Flaming Chords

Up-cycled tie coat
commissioned by
singer/songwriter & musician Richie Green
2020
"Flaming Chords" was commissioned by singer/songwriter, musician and lead singer of Giblet, Richie Green. Nikki wanted to capture Richie's skills, character and personality on the coat.
"Flaming Chords" started life as an up-cycled army surplus jacket, the thinking behind using this structure reflects Richie's spiritual journey, the flamed lining of the jacket also represents his spiritual fire, which transpires in his extraordinary guitar playing.. The Sanskrit writing, sewn upon the guitar, on the right sleeve is from the sacred script from the Guru Gita, the guitar is shaped the same as Richie's.
Nikki asked Richie for his favorite piece of music and most liked writings, she made the belt of his coat with 'Air on the G String' by Bach sewn onto it and Nikki extracted key words, peace, love, pardon, faith, hope, light and joy (taken from the St Francis' Prayer he likes) which she machine embroidered onto a piece of fabric then sewed it onto the left sleeve to make a pocket.
The back of the coat is made up with colorful ties Nikki felt reflected Richie's creativity. Nikki asked a friend to machine embroider a melting Dali clock which is sewn just under the collar at the back, because Dali is Richie's favorite artist.
'Od' made his debut Anti~Fashion appearance on Richie's coat, Nikki sewed a sequin 'Od' on a jeans pocket and placed it on the front left. In total the coat has ten pockets..

Thespian Flower

Up~cycled tie coat
commissioned by
director/play write Daisy Eris Campbell
2018
Daisy Eris Campbell commissioned 'Thespian Flower' after she spotted a friend wearing a bespoke coat. Nikki wanted to bring Daisy's character and influences over in the design of the coat, combining Daisy's personal and theatrical muse.
Thespian Flower was a technical challenge, as the original base jacket was a couple of sizes too small and the wrong colour! Nikki bleached the green/beige velvet original to reveal lilac hues on selected areas of the back and front bodice & lapels. She inserted unpicked tie panels to widen the sleeves and fitted side panels, designed by Hugh, to add width to the bodice. The back of the coat was originally tailored to waist length, Nikki appliqued full length ties to create a calf length tail effect, added a faux belt, detailed with clock pieces and attached coloured cord ties so the full jacket could be adjusted in size to a tailored or casual style. The sleeves designs are constructed from snipped up garments and sequins. The left sleeve detail, framed with a split zip, is a gem heart chopped out of a jumper. The right sleeve is a theater symbol made of beige and black sequin fabric and zips. Buttons and gems sewn onto the collar add a rainbow effect frame.

Ethnic Thespian

Up~cycled Sanskrit coat
commissioned by
actress Claudia Bolton
2018
'Ethnic Thespian' started life as a simple black woolen coat given to Nikki to up~cycle by a friend. When actress Claudia Bolton commissioned a coat Nikki knew this particular jacket's cut be an ideal base. She wanted to express Claudia's cultural, yet flamboyant, theatrical character in the design.
Silk ties deconstructed, then appliqued, make up the back bodice of the coat, Nikki wanted to introduce contrast, so she snipped patterned sections from voile material, adding definition to the neck and hem. The patch pockets were detached from old jeans' and the jacket is lined with a reversed, recycled satin dressing gown. The back of the lapels' mount Alpha & Omega symbols, embroidered in colours that replicate a light spectrum. The front lapels frame 3d flower heads, finished off with coloured, diamante gem pistils that replicate the colour of the silk embroidered flower stems. The sleeve detail is designed by Hugh and embroidered by Nikki, in 3 coloured metallic threads. The stylised Sanskrit on the left arm is for effect and does not read anything specific, the Sanskrit the right arm reads ~ 'Thou Art That'

Eclectic Punk

Up~cycled shirt coat
commissioned by
Hugh Roberts
2018
"Eclectic Punk" was born of an unworn shirt that was hidden at the back of Nikki's wardrobe. Hugh wanted a light coat for the summer evenings, so Nikki got to work!
Buttons and a zip, from a 2nd hand jacket, replaced the original shirt fastenings to decorate and fix the front bodice. Godets made with deconstructed ties were inserted to give additional volume to the sides and length to the coat.
Finally Nikki highlighted the shirts original pattern with gold fabric paint. Voila, an Eclectic Punk!

Eden Apocalypse

Up~cycled jacket
commissioned by
singer/song writer Michelle Watson
for the production of
"Cosmic Trigger" London
2017
'Eden Apocalypse' was commissioned by Michelle Watson, (The Wonderists), for the opening shows of a theatrical performance, 'Cosmic Trigger', she co-produced. Nikki wanted to bring the surreal elements of the play forward in the jacket's design, using influences borrowed from conspiracy and the psychedelic era coupled with research from the life of Robert Anton Wilson, who the play was based on.
The original linen jacket began life as an unworn charity item. The jacket's design is made up of various dis-guarded outfits and materials including an old handbag! The eyes, mouth & wording began life as a Barbie duvet cover and the frill/hem trims were a taffeta evening dress, which were ruffled to create a bustle and bow effect. Nikki deconstructed an old clock and added the hands to the eye on the back, giving the illusion of a clock face reading two minutes to midnight. The epaulettes are a doll's head symbolising Eris, a goddess character in the play and a decorative mask symbolising theatre/characters/masks. The right side of the jacket mounts a handmade sequin golden apple, which a characterised snake is eating it's way through. The apple depicts a portal, the snake's head/body imply it's in 2 dimensions. Nikki used netting, star voile fabric and sequins to give an impression of a night sky , which the apple is appliqued onto. The body of the snake can be found in detail around the whole jacket. The left side of the jacket depicts the pale horse of 'Revelation' riding through a universe. The horse was snipped out of a child's tee shirt and hand sewn onto netting and sequins.

Urban Shaman

Up~cycled Tie coat
commissioned by
Hugh Roberts
2016
Urban Shaman was a labor of love for Nikki as this was her first bespoke coat, made for her beloved Hugh.
The coat began life as a discarded dressing gown, (which forms the lining). Ties were unpicked tailored and sewn together to give a 'flow' effect to the back of the coat, while a thick woollen fabric gives a rigid structure
to the front.
Leather borrowed from an old jacket make up the collar and pockets. The coat is decorated with personal embellishments meaningful to Hugh for a truly personal finish.
