Art/abuse
All forms of abuse seek to destroy our connections to ourselves and our community, reducing us to passive objects whose only role is to serve the abuser’s twisted need for power. We become a canvass for the abuser to daub their crap onto and then hate and punish us because we smell bad, the stink of their own buried terrors.
Creativity, like play, can help us recover a sense of self. I was abused from young age, at home and at every school I was sent to and was violently raped, aged 18, on my final day of school, by a complete stranger. I entered “adulthood” with an overwhelming, constant sense of dread, expecting something awful to happen at any moment, with an accompanying, gnawing void inside.
In my fifties I once again found myself being used as the screen for someone to project their crap onto, this time in a “love” relationship.
Now I am 65, single and still recovering… Creativity is an important part of nourishing myself and finding meaning, joy and beauty and even connections with other people. I hope you enjoy my marks!
